Second Top'O Georgia Vintage Airstream Rally
November 1 - 4, 2001

The 2001 Top of Georgia Vintage Airstream Rally took place on the first weekend in November in the beautiful north Georgia mountains; the previous rally was held in November, 1999.  George James, Jr ("by George") and   Hope, and George James III and Sally, were our hosts, with George III taking good care of planning events, and George Jr. giving seminars, sharing his wealth of knowledge, and getting credit for the wonderful weather we had.  And, the facilities and hospitality  at ToG (Georgia Unit 032, WBCCI) were terrific.
There were about 32 couples in attendance, almost all vintage units.    Units from GA, AL, FL, TN, IN, NC, OH, CANADA, MA, MS, & SC were there.  9 new VAC members were enrolled, along with several new WBCCI members (ToG is a WBCCI-only park).  Instead of a rally fee, a $10 kitty fee was assessed, which covered all activities and rally-sponsored food.
Daytime was taken with optional seminars on safety and on polishing.
Beginning on Wednesday night, there were nightly events, beginning with informal "Happy Hours."  On Thursday evening, commercial video "American Odyssey," from Chris Monier, was shown in the "Library" room at the Pavillion, and proved to be so popular that several other viewings were held during the rally.  After evening events there was usually a carefully-managed campfire at an empty site (Georgia is in its fourth year of drought; care is especially important in late fall).
Also on Thursday night, George III announced a "breakfast swap," for Friday and Saturday morning.  In this event, we drew names of another couple whom we would visit for breakfast on Friday, then entertain for breakfast on Saturday.  That was a wonderful idea that got people to know one another better.  Friday night dinner was at the Unicoi State Park, just outside Helen, GA, at the lodge - a really fine buffet dinner that everyone enjoyed.
Saturday afternoon was the trailer open house, organized by Bob Brubaker.  Two couples were chosen to count votes.  Each person got a ballot, pink for the women and blue for the men.  Votes were tabulated by trailer number and separate tallies were kept for women's choice and men's choice.  The votes were combined for the overall prizes.  It turned out that the overall second place was also the women's choice, while the overall third place was taken by the men's choice.  31 women and 29 men voted.  Winners were

1st place "Best Over All" Members choice #2118 '56 Overlander, Greg & Debbie Hale,
          Snellville GA.
    1st Runner up & Ladies Choice: #2453 (3086)Lincoln & Gwen Soule '77 Tradewind,
         Wendall Mass.
2nd Runner Up & men's choice '63 Globe Trotter (1861)Sidra & Herb Spies from Ft.
          Walton Beach FL.

The rally culminated with the Saturday evening program, with announcements, door prizes, and Hors d'oeuvres.  Among the roughly 20 door prizes were a set of McKesh mirrors, a Reese Electronic Brake Controller (donated by Doug Showker), a Nora Mills granary collection of goodies, and a power polisher.
But, the real spirit of the rally was evident in the camaraderie so typical of VAC events.
